Cyprus Wine Industry

Few areas in the world produce wine on a greater per capita basis than Cyprus. It’s total wine production is fairly low compared to other countries, as we discussed before, but the overall economy is vastly dependent upon the wine industry. So many Cypriots work, in one way or another, in the creation, cultivation, or enjoyment of their wines. In this way it reminds us of Napa and Sonoma. Except of course that Cyprus is an island separated from the mainland. Where Napa and Sonoma are right next to one of the biggest commercial hubs in the world, the San Francisco Bay area.

Cyprus is best known for its sweet wines, especially Commanderia- A dessert wine made in the Commanderia region of Cyprus. Commanderia wine is made in an ancient style from sun-dried grapes which are fortified. It boasts the oldest style of wine making making on record. Although much of Cypriotic wine production is done in old world styles, Cyprus has also begun utilizing new world wine making techniques. The beauty of making wine in an area such as Cyprus, separated from most of the world and small in size, is that it can maintain its old world feel, remain profitable, and stave off mass commercialization. Many wineries around the world have become so profit driven that mass production is the norm. The business model of these massive wineries has been to create mediocre wine at the lowest cost possible in huge batches. They create strategic alliances with retailers to push their crap wine on people in speeds that allow them to repeat the process the following year. Several wineries now reach capacities of nearly 100 million cases per year.

You won’t find this kind of heartless wine production in Cyprus though. Their quaint island is ripe with tradition. When savoring the sweet flavors of Cypriot wine you will relish in the knowledge that great thought was put into every scent of your wines bouquet, every flavor, and every sensation. You are drinking wine of the oldest traditions on earth, thought to have been taught by the Greek God Dionysus himself. I don’t know about you, but I just love being a part of something greater than myself. And Cyprus wine is most assuredly that.

You can almost feel that sense that all wine on earth is somehow stemming from Cyprus. The grapes have done all the work. The vines are the oldest known. You are drinking a wine made for kings for thousands of years. It’s more than just a glass of wine, it’s a true piece of history. I despise mass commercialism, especially in the wine industry, and happily support Cyprus wines whenever I can.
